Last week we celebrated the 35th anniversary of es magazine, coming together (despite the storm) during London Fashion Week at PAVILION, the exclusive new members club in Knightsbridge. es magazine recently unveiled a new spirit, vision and look and we invited clients to meet the man behind the changes, new editor Ben Cobb, who sat down in conversation with British Fashion Council CEO, Caroline Rush.
While our guests enjoyed a turmeric infused picante and Tom Kerridge canapes, Ben shared his secrets behind the changes, his 70s style icons, his dream dinner party guests and what London means to him.
As a true Londoner, Ben has always been a fan of es, so was naturally thrilled, but daunted to come on board as editor. As the creative ‘legend’ Caroline described him to be, the no.1 place for him to start was the design of the magazine, bringing in a more classic, cleaner look. And while figuring out what es could be today, he took a lot of inspiration from the early 80’s editions, especially the pilot copy. He found the heart of es, and was thrilled to learn that it hadn’t changed much in it’s 35 years. Back then it was bold and playful, and he knew it was the right time to lean in to those characteristics more than ever.
We should be looking forward to seeing his covers and content celebrating true Londoners, with the magazine almost a mirror of London. He goes on to talk about how London is a special place, filled with amazing talent and it is our duty to nurture and protect that. And es is the perfect platform to shine a light on, and be a voice for, the next generation of Londoners.
A style icon on the London fashion scene, we found out that his role models are, perhaps unsurprisingly, mostly 70s actors, as well as his stylish father. Aside from being very busy creating weekly content (much more fast paced than the 2 editions a year he was formerly putting out), Ben is also working on a few personal projects, including a capsule collection launching in Autumn, which will hopefully free up some time to work on his book of personal style icons.
London Fashion Week was the perfect time to celebrate Ben’s new editorial vision for the magazine, as boldness, playfulness and creativity was at its peak in the city. As a partner of London Fashion Week for over 18 years, we had the privilege of placing our life and style bible across the city wide celebration and in the hands of guests at the many LFW catwalk shows and presentations.
LFW was bustling, full of energy and creativity - and more than ever our city felt a return to its original beauty and flair. We can’t wait to see what’s next for London through the eyes of Ben and his team each week as he shares what’s hot and happening in London.
